Dress and Humanity- A DHA That Works For You!
FCSE 3080, more widely known as Dress and Humanity is one option to fill USU student’s Depth Humanities and Creative Arts Requirement. But what is Dress and Humanity? Many students do not know what the class is beyond knowing it fulfills their DHA.
Taught by Dr. Windi Turner, this Service learning class incorporates group work, solo activities, service opportunities, and research while exploring the dress practices and implications of Utah State University’s culture and cultures beyond what many people have experienced.
Why do we study dress? It connects everyone on the planet. Dress influences how people see each other, extends the body’s abilities, protects, and communicates non-verbally. Socially, dress impacts everything anyone does. The real question should be: Why wouldn’t you study dress?
The Service Learning aspect of this course should also be a draw to prospective students. Throughout the course and in each module there are opportunities to be part of something bigger than yourself and reach out to help our community. The “I Will” campaign, CAPSA and The Child and Family Support Center are just a few examples of organizations students get to work with and support in this course.
Finally, the Research! While research may not immediately sound glamorous and enticing, it is a fantastic thing to get involved in as an undergraduate student. The top research projects from Dress and Humanity even have the chance to work with Dr. Turner, and possibly publishing their findings! This is a huge deal for anyone, especially undergrads.
