What is FCSE 3080 all about?
As students at Utah State University settle into the new semester, Dr. Windi Turner’s class is taking a whole new look at the dress and appearance of students on campus. The objective of the class is to recognize the mixing of cultures that can be found throughout our little city of Logan, Utah. Students are taught to understand the impact of dress and how it influences the way we view ourselves and others. Most importantly though, the objective of the class is to help students not only understand but also to work towards eliminating the implicit bias that follows dress and recognize how it influences communication between people. As a way to reach an increased knowledge and acceptance about dress, students are encouraged to pay close attention to the messages they send through not only their dress but also the things that they do and to inquire about the motivation behind their peers’ appearance through an unbiased evaluation. There are also various service learning opportunities where students in the class can make their voices heard as they stand together to help prevent intimate assault at school and throughout the community.
