Problems avoided are never solved

Problems avoided are never solved. As students at USU we need to take a stand. I believe that most of us feel like we are living in a safe bubble in the cozy, snow covered mountains of Utah. What dangers would we ever need to worry about? What we sometimes don't realize is that there are dangers and problems right here in our safe little bubble. Sexual assault has become a very real problem on USU campus. It is a problem that if we avoid discussing will never be solved. As students at USU it is our obligation to look out for one another and to help stop problems like this. How do we start? This semester’s campaign promoting the awareness of sexual assault is called “Intimate Assault by Means of Implicit Bias.” Let’s first understand what that means. First, what is intimate assault? Basically, intimate assault is any form of sexual assault. Quite frankly, rape or anything of the like. What is implicit bias? Well we all know what a bias is. Implicit bias is just a bias that we ourselves don’t realize we have. It is a subconscious bias that can alter the way we behave. Most of the sexual assaults on college campuses are caused by implicit bias. We, as students at USU can make a difference. It’s time that this issue is addressed. Help promote awareness this semester by first, finding your own implicit biases and dropping them, and second, helping others do the same. If we do this our campus will be a better and safer place for everyone.
