Sunset
As I was sitting in my room deciding how to go about my blog post and how I could best bring about awareness regarding sexual assault, I looked out my window and had some sort of epiphany, or so they say. I was sitting in front of my window at my desk, I took notice of the absolutely stunning sunset and realized how many different layers, colors and aspects were represented in just one picture and how each and every aspect of the sunset makes one big picture.
As I pondered my new findings, I saw myself making a comparison between victims of sexual assault and this picture. Although you may think this is a stretch, the several components of this sunset parallel the serval components of society and how we are essential in bringing awareness to the bigger picture and the dominant issue of sexual assault in our society.
It is so extremely important that we as a society acknowledge and recognize how we can help victims of sexual assault. There are so many aspects and layers, just like this sunset, that affect the victim. The first step to helping is that we simply believe them and acknowledge that they are not just a statistic, but a person. Yes, statistics regarding sexual assault are so important to bring light and awareness to this topic but we must recognize that a vast amount of statistics provided are statistics regarding unreported sexual assault.
Just like a sunrise or the beginning of a sunset, we can not see that it is going to happen, however we know that it will, just as any situation with sexual assault, we must believe the vicim and believe that it happened. This subject is such a sensitive subject but needs to be brought forth to the surface to help the victims of sexual assault and help them on their road to recovery. Acknowledging that each and every one of us, can help victims of sexual assault, it may not be on a personal level, but to acknowledge their strength and to acknowledge the bigger picture and how you CAN positively affect their road to recovery, is vital.
At the end of every sunset is a sunrise, we as a society need to see ourselves as the sunrise, the change, the light and the a new start regarding how we as a society can help victims of sexual assault.
